Anna Godbersen

Bio

Anna Godbersen is the author of two young adult historical fiction series, both set in New York. The Luxe series features socialite teens in Gilded Age Manhattan while Bright Young Things, Godbersen’s second series, takes place in Gatsby-era Long Island.

Her first novel The Luxe was published in 2007. Its sequels are Rumors, Envy, and Splendor. The series follows socialite Elizabeth Holland from New York to Paris and back again through her teen years into life as a newlywed.

The Bright Young Things series follows three girls, a flapper, an heiress, and a starlet, as they relish the Roaring Twenties with its speakeasies and Long Island luxury estates. Godbersen’s research for Bright Young Things included reading 1920-era issues of the The New Yorker and referencing The Great Gatsby, which she said was "possibly the most devastatingly sad novel I have ever read."

Godbersen attended Berkeley High School in her hometown of Berkeley, California and then earned her bachelor's degree at New York's Barnard College, where she studied English and creative writing. After college, Godbersen got a job assisting the literary editor at Esquire and she also reviewed books for the magazine's website. Godbersen broke into the literary world by first ghostwriting young adult novels with other authors. She now lives in Brooklyn with her husband.
