10. Lord Percy Blakeney and his wife Marguerite St. Just. He’s the Scarlet Pimpernel. She’s the woman who betrayed him. They distrust each other as much as they love each other. Which is a lot–at one point the guy literally bends down and KISSES THE GROUND SHE WALKS ON. I have waited my whole life for someone to love me that much . . . although it’s possible it would seem creepy in real life. It’s not creepy in the book though. It’s wonderful.
9. Buffy and Spike. You can keep your other vampire sagas: Buffy is the only one I care about. And while Buffy’s great love is supposedly Angel, the vampire with a soul, I’ve always been a Spike girl. Spike is a ruthless, heartless, soulless creature with a bad habit of falling head over heels in love with the wrong women. When he starts crushing on the Slayer, she couldn’t be more horrified, but eventually their kicks and punches start being interspersed with kisses. It’s crazy and mildly perverted–and the most fun I’ve ever had watching TV.
8. Alec and Seregil. I’m a huge fantasy reader: I probably clock more hours reading fantasy than anything else. I recently reread the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling, and the first two books are about as good as romantic fantasy gets. The two main characters fight evil and save each other’s lives and gradually–very slowly and carefully and tentatively–fall in love. Two strong handsome men who would die for each other . . . <happy sigh>
7. Homer and Marge. My husband writes for The Simpsons, so I have access to the inside story, and I hope I’m not giving away any trade secrets when I reveal that the reason Marge loves Homer so much (despite everything he does wrong) is that he’s great in bed. Also? He adores her completely and could never love another woman the way he does her. Think about how many TV characters fall in and out of love a million times and then think about how constant Homer and Marge are. It’s a rare love.
6. Emma and Mr. Knightley. I adore their relationship. He guides and scolds her and she teases and ignores him–and underneath all that is pure mutual adoration–it just takes them a while to realize it. I can still remember the very first time I read Emma. I totally fell for the “he’s just like an older brother to her” set up and then . . . wow. As much as I love Darcy and Elizabeth (from Pride and Prejudice), this is my favorite romance in all of Austen’s novels.
5. Veronica Mars and Logan Echolls. Veronica Mars has already been off the air for a bunch of years, but I watched it on Netflix–and once I started in on the first season, I basically ignored all my responsibilities so I could just get back to the TV. Veronica and Logan are filled with anger and grief when the series starts, but eventually they realize there’s mutual attraction there too. And it’s just so . . . so . . . soooooosoooosoooo. No words. Just watch that first season if you can.
4. Bella Wilfer and John Harmon. Only a nerd would bring up Dickens on a list like this–but so be it. In Our Mutual Friend, John can only inherit his father’s fortune if he marries the spoiled, self-centered and incredibly beautiful Bella Wilfer. He doesn’t want her to marry him for the money, so he does what any boy would: creates a fake identity to see if she’ll fall in love with him for himself alone. The scenes between them are beautifully written and about as romantic as anything you can find.
3. Sherlock and Watson. If you’ve seen the recent BBC series Sherlock, I won’t have to explain to you why the Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock)/Martin Freeman (Watson) combo is so freaking awesome. It just is. They’re not in love (well, maybe they are . . .), they’re not in a committed relationship (or are they?), they don’t fit any conventional stereotypes . . . they just belong together and need each other. And I need them. The show’s been on break way too long.
2. Katniss and Peeta. I spent the entire three books of the Hunger Games Trilogy barely breathing as I raced through the pages–not because of the action (well, not just because of the action) but because I was desperate for these two to end up together. But most of the time Katniss is too busy saving her family and the world to notice that Peeta isn’t pretending to be in love with her the way she is with him–he really is in love. I’m a sucker for a quiet guy who loves deeply and unselfishly.
1. Jane Eyre and Rochester. When the power is all his, he tortures her like crazy–deliberately flirts with a far more beautiful woman to make her jealous. But when the tables are turned, and Jane becomes wealthy and Rochester loses not only his sight but a limb or two, what does Jane do? She tortures him RIGHT BACK, letting him know she’s had an offer of marriage from a far more handsome man. And that’s why we love Jane so much: she may be quiet, but she’s not a pushover. Not for a second.

LOVE this post! – Sir Percy and Marguerite have been making me swoon since 7th grade! I remember his kissing the ground as they come home one morning after a party (I thought it was weird.) And though I like Leslie and Merle, my favorite rendition of the story is the early 80′s version with Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour
And Veronica and Logan is so much hotter than Veronica and Duncan – bravo. And Spike and Buffy? Totally! He fell in love with her while he was BAD and got a soul just for her. Sigh. Sherlock and Watson – so divine. And Emma and Mr. Knightly – what I love so much about them is they are friends – friends who fall in love. Wow – for Austen to have created friends who fall in love – back at the time in that social class? Visionary.

Seeing Sherlock and Watson on here just made me so happy! haha As far as TV couples go, I love Barney and Robin on HIMYM and The Doctor and Rose. I haven’t read Emma yet, so Elizabeth and Darcy are still my favorite Austen couple.
